An Interview With Our Mattress Pro
Dewey Turner has worked at FloBeds for over 10 years selling original blended and all-natural latex mattresses. He has walked countless customers through the process of mattress shopping, so I interviewed Dewey to see if I could gather some mattress shopping information.
Things You Should Know When Mattress Shopping
If I am looking for an all-natural latex mattress where should I start?
If you have decided you want to go with a latex mattress, I can say your on the right track! Whether you purchase a bed from us or anyone else, I would highly recommend all latex. Latex is more durable than anything used in the bedding industry, and here at FloBeds we can make sure you get the proper support needed for your body, without compromising comfort. What is an ILD?
ILD stand for Indentation Load Deflection and is a standard for measuring foam firmness. This is the universal scale in which the firmness of latex is labeled throughout the bedding industry. Below is a list of the ILD’s for each of our firmness levels, as well as a more scientific description of ILD.
|Soft Blended||19 ILD|
|Soft Natural||22 ILD|
|Medium (Natural and Blended)||28 ILD|
|Firm (Natural and Blended)||32 ILD|
|Extra Firm (Natural and Blended)||36 ILD|
|Super Firm (Natural and Blended)||44 ILD|
ILD is a firmness measurement that is a standard for measuring firmness. It is also called IFD, or Indention Force Deflection. It is a measure of load bearing capacity or firmness. IFD is measured on the surface as 25% IFD. For example to determine 25% IFD, a four-inch thick latex sample is compressed to three-inch thickness. The number of pounds required to achieve compression is the 25% IFD value. The higher the IFD the firmer the surface feel.
What is the difference between Talalay and Dunlop?
For years we carried Natural Dunlop processed latex for our natural customers, because before the year 2005 Natural Talalay was not available. During the years that we were carrying Natural Dunlop, we ran into many issues. We are selling a product 90% of the time to customers over the phone or off our website, we are selling sight unseen. Often, a customer may be rather skeptical when the mattress they just ordered arrives in pieces. During the installation our customers tend to look at each piece rather closely, touching, feeling, and even smelling the foam rubber going into the bed they plan to spend the next 20 years on. With the Dunlop Latex customers would notice that one firm Dunlop core felt different than the next, eye brows began to raise, and customers looked even closer and noticed that the firmness was not even consistent in the head and foot of one piece. We are really micro tuning mattresses for folks here, and the inconsistency’s our customers found in the Dunlop processed latex made our job a bit more difficult. The Talalay process just produces a more consistent, durable product, a product we are happy to stamp our name on.

Why do you suggest a customized bed?
With a conventional mattress made by say, one of the major “S” brands, a very large couple may walk into a showroom and be told one mattress will be good for them. Lets say he weighs 300lbs, while she is 275lbs. Later that afternoon it would not be uncommon for that very same mattress to be sold to another couple weighing half as much. What I’m getting at here is, people are built differently, their mattresses should be too. Here’s a link to more information on that topic: https://www.flobeds.com/changeable-firmness/
What kind of warranty questions should I ask?
Most mattress company’s have warranties, often overstated, and over claimed. The question is will the company your thinking of going with stand behind their warranty? Many will not, we will: http://www.bbb.org/greater-san-francisco/business-reviews/mattresses/flobeds-in-fort-bragg-ca-15241 and have been since the 70’s. We think it is a good sign when the company has been in business longer than its warranty.
Care for your Organic Cotton & Wool Cover
Below are some basic tips for FloBeds’ customers. Our natural and blended latex mattresses have easy but specific care instructions.
Natural Latex Mattress /Cover Care Instructions
Our covers unzip, so you can easily hang your mattress top in the sun. We suggest sunning your mattress-top a couple of times a year. Sunning will kill dust mites. Latex is dust mite resistant. If you suffer from severe allergies, with the top off, you can vacuum the inside top of your mattress components to remove allergens. That, combined with your sunned mattress top will provide you with cleanest and most comfortable mattress possible. Your mattress cover may be spot washed with cold water and mild soap. It should be line dried.
DO NOT MACHINE WASH AND DO NOT PUT IN DRYER.
We Don’t Believe in Turning Your Mattress
|Push at corners A and B while|
mattress is lying flat.
|Position mattress across bed so that|
it hangs over one foot or more.
|Raise mattress up on edge as|
indicated in the illustration.
|Let mattress fall gently toward head|
of bed as shown.
|Push alternately on corners A and B|
to position mattress.
|WARNING: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TURN THE MATTRESS BY YOURSELF.|
This may result in personal injury or damage to your
mattress. Handles should be used only to position the mattress. They
may pull out if used to support the full weight of the mattress.
Your dreams may vary.
Fitting a Bed in a Box – 2007 UPS Case Study
In these days of hectic work and exhaustive family life, a good night’s sleep represents a sweet escape. Having a comfortable mattress makes that time even more enjoyable. But defining comfortable is a very personal thing. FloBeds has found a way to customize and tailor each mattress to the individual demands of each customer while pioneering a way to use UPS to ensure top-notch customer service. “Originally we allowed our customers to configure the ‘Bed of Your Dreams’
“Originally we allowed our customers to configure the ‘Bed of Your Dreams’ online, but we would build the mattresses here,” said owner and inventor Dave Turner. A mattress that was built to order for the specific requirements of each sleeper was shipped within days. “We started out using freight truck lines. But, freight cost became expensive and there was never a definite delivery date to share with our customers.”
The final straw: A customer in Ohio called to report the freight line wouldn’t deliver the bed to her home because of her narrow street.
Now, UPS delivers FloBeds right to the customer’s door. Yes, UPS delivers the mattress … and a box spring, too.
FloBeds designed a mattress system that could be shipped using UPS. Each system consists of covers, padding, four customizable comfort layers and a foundation. “Using solid wood sides and struts, we created a foundation that could ship UPS and yet only require an eight wing-nut assembly. Now every order ships on time and is trackable.”
When a customer visits FloBeds.com, they complete a step-by-step process of selecting the ideal components for each bed and if they wish, even customizing the firmness of each side.
Once the order is complete, FloBeds uses UPS Worldship to handle all the shipping functions and generate shipping labels. Normally, each bed ships in five packages.
Thanks to UPS’s Quantum View Manage, FloBeds can provide each customer with the location of in-transit packages or specify exactly when the packages will arrive. By providing the tracking details to customers via the Internet as well as telephone, FloBeds is able to reduce service calls.
Flobeds customers can conveniently switch out the parts to adjust firmness, using UPS Return Service. Each shipment includes a return label, they just pack it and call for pick-up or drop it off at one of 5,000 UPS drop-off locations.
Adds Dave, “Our business has grown leaps and bounds since we converted to UPS and in the process, UPS made our shipping, even internationally, a breeze. We are able to provide our customers with superior quality mattresses without tacking on top-dollar shipping cost.”
And that’s something that will help you sleep at night.

How a FloBed Will Improve the Quality of Your Vacation
Needless to say, we are very proud of the June 17th edition!
June 17, 2002 Newsweek TipSheet
GOLDILOCKS WAS RIGHT
OR MAYBE NOT. While this axiom is widely held, it turns out there isn’t scientific evidence to back it up. The conventional wisdom on firmness derives from the days when a good bed was a luxury. “Physicians used to advise people to put a board under the mattress to keep it from sagging,” says Dr. Richard Deyo, a back-pain expert at the University of Washington. In fact, experts say the ideal bunk is not a hard one or a soft one—but a comfy one. It turns out Goldilocks was correct not to sleep in either the Papa Bear’s or Mama Bear’s bed.
So how can you improve your chances of finding that bliss? Americans typically buy a new bed every 10 years. But don’t go by the numbers—listen to your body. Do you wake up stiff, sore or unrested? If you ache in the morning—not just after holding yourself upright all day—your bed may be at fault. An uncomfortable mattress can also keep you active during the night, leaving you weary during the day.
When you shop, try lying on your back without a pillow for at least five minutes. The mattress should stay in contact with your body, so that your hand fits snugly into the small of your back. Switch to your side and make sure you don’t notice pressure on your hips or shoulders. None of this is a
guarantee. That’s why you should buy with the option to return or exchange—sleep shops like 1-800-MATTRESS and Mattress Discounters (1-800-BUY-A-BED) allow exchanges within 30 or 60 days.
Better yet, find a mattress you can adjust to the point of perfection. Flobeds (flobeds.com or 1-800-FLOBEDS) sells stackable latex panels that range from soft to superfirm. Stack two panels of different firmness for a truly customized sleep. And because each side of the mattress has separate panels, your partner can sleep on marble while you float on marshmallows.
