Spring has arrived! Although we have all heard of spring cleaning closets, have you ever heard of spring cleaning your sleep routine? Here are 3 ways you can spring clean to sleep better:
1. Remove all technology from your bed. The blue light from your phone can keep you from getting quality sleep, so find another place for it to spend the night.
2. Wash your comforter. Most people wash their sheets on a regular basis, but not their comforters. According to Sleep.org the, “National Sleep Foundation’s own Bedroom Poll found that nearly three out of four people say they get a more comfortable night’s sleep when their bedding has a fresh scent.”
3. Rid your room of the clutter. Having a clean room puts your mind at ease and will help you sleep better.
So leave your phone in the other room, toss your comforter in the wash, pick up those socks that missed the dirty clothes hamper, and get ready to sleep better this spring.
According to sleep.org, “It doesn’t matter when you hit the gym, just that you get in your daily burn. People who work out regularly sleep better—and longer—than those who don’t.” For some, working out can sound daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. Try grabbing a friend and taking a nice long walk along your favorite scenic route. Biking is another fun way to workout and its low impact. If you are someone who likes to work out but does not have time to do it regularly, make time. Even thirty minutes a day of a weight training circuit will be enough.
Working out at least 150 minutes a week has been found to increase quality of sleep by 65%. Not only will it help you sleep better at night but it will help you feel less sleepy during the day. The National Sleep Foundation found that,”Increasingly, the scientific evidence is encouraging as regular physical activity may serve as a non-pharmaceutical alternative to improve sleep.” So put down the sleeping pills, pick up you phone, call your friend, and go get your sleep inducing workout in!

Do you ever go to bed feeling very sleepy but you still have a hard time getting the quality sleep you need? Well the journal Cell Reports has found that this may be due to your circadian clock being out of whack. Getting things back in sync could be as easy as picking the right bedtime snack. Researchers have found that eating the right carbohydrate-rich snack at night could help re-set you clock. Carbs increase insulin secretion which stimulates healthy circadian patterns. Listed below are three healthy options, but remember to stick to snack size portions!
- Almond Butter on Bread- a slice of whole-grain bread with a tablespoon of almond butter
- Cherries- these have approximately 24 grams of carbs per cup
- Whole-Grain Crackers- switch chips with a few 100% whole grain crackers
