Natural before it was “Green”.

At FloBeds, we construct our natural latex mattresses with what folks now-a-days call Green materials, like natural rubber, organic cotton and Plein-Air Wool, not because we are jumping on the green bandwagon to sell our wares, but because it is the right thing to do.  And because, that’s how we have always done it.

Saving on Seconds

*SOLD OUT*
Wow… we didn’t make it to Cyber Monday… didn’t count on so many of our customers jumping on our clearance… The warehouse is back in order. Thank you FloBed owners!
Seconds? Latex cores and toppers that are not first quality.  A manufacturing mistake (maybe a rough surface) , truck or forklift damage or a core made up of 3 or 4 smaller pieces laminated.  We have been providing the best quality latex available anywhere.  Others put their latex in a cover and sew it up… you never see it.  We let you manipulate your latex cores to make the mattress firmness just right!  And you get to see every piece… touch it, squeeze it and appreciate it.  So of course we make sure only the best latex goes to our customers.

It only goes to follow we have to set some pieces aside.  Some pieces becomes more pieces and soon we start taking up serious warehouse space.  So what to do?  We decided to have a “Seconds Sale” and offer our beds at a big discount.  Save this Thanksgiving weekend.  We couldn’t decide whether to call it a Black Friday Sale, Cyber Monday or Clearance Sale.   So we went with all three.  Welcome to the Black-Friday Cyber-Monday Clearance Sale this Thanksgiving weekend.  All our designs:  Save!  Every one with a new “First” quality FloBeds cover made of organic cotton stretch knit quilted to organic wool.  Inside will be “Second” quality FloBeds Talalay latex components.  These beds will sleep the same:  just as comfortable, just as adjustable (you even get the Golidlocks Guarantee where you can buy 2 additional firmness cores for $75 for 5 years) and just as durable.

Who’s using all the natural latex?

When we started making our Latex Beds in the 1997 we were the only ones in the United States other than the once mighty Englander. Back then Europe had regional manufacturers of latex mattresses. Natura of Canada started showing up at trade shows not too much later. Now, it seems every innerspring company in the country wants to add a couple of inches of latex and say “featuring 100% latex.  It’s a crying shame.  A couple of the higher end lines have an all latex mattress, top-to-bottom and side-to-side, and are charging a king’s ransom (but they have a big distribution network to support, suppliers, factories, distributors, retailers and, of course, Madison Avenue).  If you find one that is entirely Talalay Latex, like ours, you can expect to pay a thousand or two more than our prices. But back to the question: “Who’s using all the natural latex?“. Here is a graph of what natural rubber is looking like on the commodities market.

Natural Rubber Commodity Prices 2010-2011
Natural Rubber Commodity Prices 2010-2011

I believe three things are affecting the price of rubber.
1) We’re selling so many latex mattresses;)
2) The Chinese and other developing countries are using a lot more rubber, from automobiles to consumer products.
3) Wall Street is making tons of money in the commodities market, and you and I are paying for those bonuses.

We are working hard to keep the price reasonable for you, and, of course, we still back up our beds with the best customer service in the business (some say the best they have seen since they fell in love with Nordstroms).  Again, this is where our Manufacturer Direct model works so well for our customers:  every increase in product cost does not get marked up 2 or 3 times.

no such thing…

Who says “There’s no such thing as a…
Free Foundation Sale
but remember, it only counts under a great mattress!

And we guarantee you’ll love it… or your money back! I remember when Rocky first challenged sales to try and sell more beds with foundations then the wood shop could make.  That was one of our most successful events ever!  Since then, when spring and summer roll around, and folks are outside, not thinking about how they slept last night… we sometimes kick it up a notch and have a foundation sale.

And boy, when you see the quality of what Rocky and his team put out… you wonder how we can afford to do it.

Dave’s Word

Sage sleep advice from FloBeds founder, Dave Turner, who also happens to be the Mayor of our fair city of Fort Bragg, California… Really, he’s our founder and our Mayor!  We had to give him his own “column”.
Life is too short for a cheap mattress.  OK, something original… Quality is important.  As my kids say: “Huge”.  We don’t cut corners when it comes to the quality of our components.  And because of our manufacturer-direct-to-you model, our prices are still reasonable.  But right up there with quality and our attention to detail is our attention to YOU.  We’re real good at getting your mattress Just Right for your body.  And when we don’t, were the best at making it right.  We can tune our beds to you.  If we can’t… we give your money back.  It’s not complicated, but it takes a lot of attention.  We promise to give you our attention.  I hope you enjoy our new improved look.  Thanks Eve.

All About Talalay Latex

Ever wonder about the latex FloBeds uses to make our beds? We’re proud to say we use Talalay latex, a process that produces the finest quality latex available. It’s American made, and is the most resilient, consistent, and breathable latex available.

Here’s a video that tells you all about it…

Buying a Green Mattress

People who care about the environment and live a green lifestyle want their bed to be all-natural too.

Purchasing a mattress is a significant investment, so here are some tips to help you get the best value when you buy green.

First, know what materials to look for. You’ll avoid mattresses made of environmentally unfriendly materials if you look for organic cotton, untreated wool, natural latex and sustainably harvested pine.

The organic cotton should be where it counts most… next to your body. Organic cotton is the original sustainable fabric, grown and processed with out chemicals.

Mattress covers should include natural wool. Wool is naturally fire and pest resistant, so a blend of wool and cotton is better than cotton-only. Organic wool allows air-flow around your body, and naturally wicks away moisture. You’ll not only sleep cool and dry, but sleep with peace of mind, knowing the wool is the finest wool gathered in the most sheep-friendly way. Organic wool is free of pollutants and harmful substances with zero chemicals used during the growing and processing. There should be wool on all six sides of the mattress.
When you look inside of a green mattress, expect to find certified natural latex. Not foam, not metal springs, just layers of 100% natural latex. 100% natural means there are no petro-chemicals, just natural rubber harvested sustainably from the rubber tree. 100% natural latex is a great green choice as it’s biodegradable and Oekotex Certified.

The wood foundation should be all natural too. Look for foundations made from FSC certified pine sustainably harvested from Ponderosa Pine forests in the western United States and Birch Forests in Western Europe.

Next, learn about the maker of the mattress; this is easy since very few companies specialize in building green mattresses.

Visit their web site to see what they have to say, and ask around to see what their customers say about their products and service. Then call the company and see how much they know about green products and what they’re like to work with.

Once you find a mattress made of quality organic materials, produced by a company with a good reputation for quality and service, find out where to purchase their bed. Most retail mattress stores do not offer all-natural mattresses so the best place to find a green mattress is online.  Buying on-line direct from the manufacturer works because you get to really sleep on the bed so you know how your body feels in the morning.  Just make certain they have a money back guarantee and will work with you to get ‘just right’.

Buying on-line can also be good for the environment. Ask if the company uses Smart Packaging to save on resources. A king size mattress and foundation can be shipped in just 4 small cartons which saves fuel and trees. And buying direct from the factory saves fuel and distribution costs.

recycle green mattress: latex, woo, cotton

Finally, you can rest easy if you know your green mattress can be recycled at the end of it’s life. Every part of a green sleep system should be 100% recyclable and biodegradable.

FloBeds was the first mattress company to use wool (and no chemicals) to pass the new Federal FR standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Hi,  We tried out the Royal Pedic quilt top pure latex mattress at ABC Carpet and Home store and liked it very much, except for the price. I’m wondering if you’re familiar enough with Royal Pedic’s products to recommend whether it’s possible to create a similar feeling product from your own lineup.

Here is a link to it (although the image is wrong as it’s not actually a pillowtop as shown).  The product tearsheet link along the bottom of the page shows the correct image along with some specs, but unfortunately not the ILD ratings

http://www.abchome.com/nbsp/hpmattresses/tabid/250/productId/321/Default.aspx

I’m not especially concerned about whether the materials qualify as all-organic. However I would be interested to know whether your all-natural latex actually feels any different than your blended talalay latex.

I’m also not concerned about whether the thickness is exactly the same, I’m more interested in knowing if we could put together a mattress that feels about the same as the Royal Pedic regardless of the physical differences.

Could you also point me to some pictures of the cotton/wool cover you use on your mattresses, and describe how much padding is in it?
Thanks,
Dan

A: Dan,  The Royal Pedic 7 zone would be most comparable to our vZone mattress.(blended latex version https://www.flobeds.com/products/6299EK ) (Natural Latex version https://www.flobeds.com/products/6499EK ) Most manufactures are producing some sort of zoned mattress these days to relieve pressure points for a sleepers shoulders and hips as well as offer additional lumbar support. In order to match the feel of the Royal Pedic exactly we would need the ild’s of the latex used, however we at FloBeds feel that a mattress should be custom built for each sleeper, while the Royal Pedic may have felt great in the store the chances of it being the perfect sleeping surface for each of you is slim. Based on your body weight,  height, sleeping style, we can recommend what we feel would be best for each of you, we then give you 100 nights to make sure the bed is for you.  Our Goldilocks Guranantee lets you fine tune your mattress for 20 years https://www.flobeds.com/guarantee/goldilocks-guarantee.htm.

As to our 100% natural Talalay vs The Blended Talalay (30% natural 70% synthetic) I tell folks; as far as look, touch, feel, performance, and warranty goes the two are the same. The Natural will run a little bit thicker and weigh more, but it really comes down to a personal preference.

Here is a link to our organic cotton and wool cover https://www.flobeds.com/information/natural-organic/covers.htm , we use 1inch of organic wool in the quilted top, as well as needle punched wool in the side walls and bottom of the cover for our flame barrier. Wool is naturally flame resistant, and a great addition to the organic cotton ticking in our mattress covers.

If you have any further questions about our mattresses, please feel free to give us a call, or email back.

Thanks,
Dewey Turner
