About 5 years ago I had back aches almost all the time because of my work as a Nursing Assistant at the area hospital. My daughter had gotten a FloBed, and for several years encouraged me to buy one. After a lot of thought, and more pain, I decided to get one. It came in really small boxes compared to what I had expected. I took them out and laid them on the bed in the order I thought I would like, with firm and soft on the side I sleep on the most. Almost immediately I noticed I was sleeping longer through the night, not waking up every time I had to turn over because of my pains. After about a year, I decided to change my side of the bed to firm with medium on top. That is when I really felt the best relief. Now I don’t have those back aches, and other joint pains from sleeping on those metal coils. I am able to get a really good rest. I am so glad I got that bed, I wish I had gotten it years sooner. If I had ordered one after I first heard my daughter rave about hers, I would have been a lot happier a few years sooner. I really do love my bed.
I am writing to let you know that my husband and I sleep on a Duxiana mattress. I decided to purchase a high quality, healthy mattress for our teenage son. He and I went to the Duxiana store together, but I did not want to spend quite that much money on his mattress. I had heard about your Flobeds natural talalay mattresses from my sister and decided to purchase one for my son. He has the comfiest bed in our home. His bed is by far cozier and more comfortable than mine with the Duxiana mattress. In fact, I recently purchased a talalay topper from Flobeds to put on top of my Duxiana to make it more comfortable. It has helped, but the full flobeds mattress is still more comfortable than my own.
Thank you for your excellent, natural, healthy, comfortable product.
Q1: My first question is my wife has a “slight” sensitivity to latex. With the way your bed is constructed, you never really touch the latex while sleeping. Have you found this to be a problem with any of your customers?
Dewey Answers: We have had no allergic reactions to our Talalay Latex even with people who have severe latex allergies. Check out this link to learn more about it. Latex Allergies.
Q2: Is there an advantage using one of your foundations compared to using the box spring set I already have?
Dewey Answers: You can expect our foundations to last the life of our mattresses, and they not only last longer, they promote great air flow. Most box springs start to give way between 5 and 7 years. Since the life of our latex mattress is 20 plus years, we decided to move away from the industry norm of the box spring construction and started building foundations that would last as long as our mattresses.
Q3: Will my mattress be new made with new cores?
Dewey Answers: Any time you purchase a latex layer from us, it will be BRAND NEW.
So it’s not just me… I recently read a study that shows people sleep better, suffer less back pain AND experience fewer symptoms of stress when sleeping on a new bed. I love it when science confirms what what we hear from people who sleep on a FloBed.
Oklahoma State University did the study and I read about in Bed Times magazine. They examined a set of stress-related factors that showed significant decreases in stress, decreases that paralleled the improvements in sleep and back discomfort associated with sleeping on a new mattress. To make certain it was the benefit of the bed and not the setting, the new beds were the same size as the participants’ original beds and were in the participants own bedrooms with their own linen and pillows.
The proved what you already knew, you really do feel better physically and mentally sleeping on your new bed.
We were proud to be part of a fund-raising effort that contributed $325 to Redwood Valley’s Humane Society of Inland Mendocino County. Our all-natural dog bed was one of the raffle prizes that helped Visit Mendocino raise $650 at San Jose’s Bark in the Park. The rest of the raffle donation, $325, was donated to MCDOG to support the coast’s dog parks.
Q: We tried out the XYZ quilt top pure latex mattress at ABC Carpet and Home store and liked it very much, except for the price. I’m wondering if you’re familiar enough with XYZ’s products to recommend whether it’s possible to create a similar feeling product from your own lineup.
A: The XYZ 7-Zone would be most comparable to one of our vZone mattress blended latex version or natural latex version. Most manufactures are producing some sort of zoned mattress these days to relieve shoulder and hip pressure points or offer additional lumbar support. To match the feel of the XYZ exactly we would need the ILD’s of the latex used.
But rather than trying to match the feel of their 7-Zone, we’d rather build a bed that’s just right for the two of you. While the XYZ may have felt great in the store, the chances of it being the perfect sleeping surface for both of you is slim. Based on your body weight, height and sleeping style, and that of your sleeping partner, we can recommend what we feel would be best for each of you.
People who care about the environment and live a green lifestyle want their bed to be all-natural too.
Purchasing a mattress is a significant investment, so here are some tips to help you get the best value when you buy green.
First, know what materials to look for. You’ll avoid mattresses made of environmentally unfriendly materials if you look for organic cotton, untreated wool, natural latex and sustainably harvested pine.
The organic cotton should be where it counts most… next to your body. Organic cotton is the original sustainable fabric, grown and processed with out chemicals.
Mattress covers should include natural wool. Wool is naturally fire and pest resistant, so a blend of wool and cotton is better than cotton-only. Organic wool allows air-flow around your body, and naturally wicks away moisture. You’ll not only sleep cool and dry, but sleep with peace of mind, knowing the wool is the finest wool gathered in the most sheep-friendly way. Organic wool is free of pollutants and harmful substances with zero chemicals used during the growing and processing. There should be wool on all six sides of the mattress.
When you look inside of a green mattress, expect to find certified natural latex. Not foam, not metal springs, just layers of 100% natural latex. 100% natural means there are no petro-chemicals, just natural rubber harvested sustainably from the rubber tree. 100% natural latex is a great green choice as it’s biodegradable and Oekotex Certified.
The wood foundation should be all natural too. Look for foundations made from FSC certified pine sustainably harvested from Ponderosa Pine forests in the western United States and Birch Forests in Western Europe.
Next, learn about the maker of the mattress; this is easy since very few companies specialize in building green mattresses.
Visit their web site to see what they have to say, and ask around to see what their customers say about their products and service. Then call the company and see how much they know about green products and what they’re like to work with.
Once you find a mattress made of quality organic materials, produced by a company with a good reputation for quality and service, find out where to purchase their bed. Most retail mattress stores do not offer all-natural mattresses so the best place to find a green mattress is online. Buying on-line direct from the manufacturer works because you get to really sleep on the bed so you know how your body feels in the morning. Just make certain they have a money back guarantee and will work with you to get ‘just right’.
Buying on-line can also be good for the environment. Ask if the company uses Smart Packaging to save on resources. A king size mattress and foundation can be shipped in just 4 small cartons which saves fuel and trees. And buying direct from the factory saves fuel and distribution costs.
Finally, you can rest easy if you know your green mattress can be recycled at the end of it’s life. Every part of a green sleep system should be 100% recyclable and biodegradable.
FloBeds was the first mattress company to use wool (and no chemicals) to pass the new Federal FR standards.
