Dear FloBeds,

We’ve had our new FloBed for 3 months now, and I want to write and let you know how it all turned out.

My husband and I didn’t realize how different we are as to the firmness we need to be comfortable. He prefers a firmer surface. After some jostling of layers, he settled in rather comfortably with firm—over his zone layer—over extra firm. He has many clips in his side of the euro-foundation (I have just two under the small of my back). He no longer has to get out of bed at night, just to work the kinks out before returning to bed again.

I started out on a medium-over-medium, which I realized immediately was too firm. So we ordered a soft, which I put over my medium, but that was too soft. Then I returned to the medium-over-medium, but, again, it was too firm. Then I put the soft under the medium, and it was much better. I was much more comfortable with that configuration, but I felt that the effect of my zone had been diminished by the soft layer. That’s when we ordered a custom zone to replace the soft layer. With a 14-inch zone of medium to support my back, and soft above for my painful shoulders, and soft below for my painful lower hips, this zone turned out to be just the answer. First, I put it under the medium. It was an improvement, and my hips were very happy, as they sank into cushy softness, but my shoulders were still hurting. Then I put the new zone on top of the medium, and AT LAST! No pain! I couldn’t believe it... I thought I might just be imagining it. A few days later, I switched the layers back just to find out, and, wow... there was that pain again, and no mistaking it. the next day I retuned the layer to their final resting place: zone—over custom-zone—over medium... and once again, I had no pain when I went to bed last night. I’m ecstatic! I’d come to accept the fact that I’d never find a bed that could make my pain go away... But FloBeds did it. I can’t thank you enough.

You’ve ended my painful nights, and my 10-year search for a bed that will feel good for both of us, and not begin to break-down and cave-in within months of purchase. Neither of us had to sacrifice comfort for the sake of the other, neither did we have to compromise with something in-between... too soft for him, but still too hard for me. Thank you so much.

We made a point of visiting your store while on vacation... I’m so glad we did. Dewey was incredibly helpful, polite, informative, and patient... and has been so, every time we’ve called since. He sold us on your mattress.

I don’t believe there is another mattress company that offers the level of customization and incredibly great service as FloBeds. Your 90-day trial period, your customer service and warranty policies are awesome, and your employees are nice. I believe this is one purchase we’ll be grateful for every night for a very long time.

I love mine after so many disasters with spring and coil t-op of the line mattresses that sagged after 3 years. The part about flobeds is that you BUILD your own bed! Mine has 3 layers, the bottom layer is 100% medium density latex, the middle layer is 100% soft density latex, and the t-op layer is visco elastic memory foam. When the bed arrives you get a 90 day test drive. During that period you can send back any of the layers (simply unzip the lovely padded wool t-op to remove and replace the various foam layers) and try something softer or firmer. You have total control of the level of support. The mattress will NEVER sag...never needs rotating or flipping...it is terrific! Customer service was A-1!! I found tempurpedic to feel like I was sleeping on a ROCK...hated it. Someone who wants extreme support may like that bed. Be warned. Latex comes in infinite densitys! I tried out the Englander and that was also way to hard for me. Just because a bed is 100% latex does not mean that it will feel exactly the same as any other 100% latex bed.

June 17 issue — Sooner or later, we all have to buy a new mattress. The choices are confusing: pillow t-op or cushion firm, springs or foam? Being a discriminating shopper means climbing into the sack in the middle of a crowded store while pushy salespeople hover. You make a choice after that brief encounter, and you have to sleep with it for years. At least there’s been one comfortingly simple rule: the firmer the mattress, the better for your back.

OR MAYBE NOT. While this axiom is widely held, it turns out there isn’t scientific evidence to back it up. The conventional wisdom on firmness derives from the days when a good bed was a luxury. “Physicians used to advise people to put a board under the mattress to keep it from sagging,” says Dr. Richard Deyo, a back-pain expert at the University of Washington. In fact, experts say the ideal bunk is not a hard one or a soft one—but a comfy one. It turns out Goldilocks was correct not to sleep in either the Papa Bear’s or Mama Bear’s bed.
So how can you improve your chances of finding that bliss? Americans typically buy a new bed every 10 years. But don’t go by the numbers—listen to your body. Do you wake up stiff, sore or unrested? If you ache in the morning—not just after holding yourself upright all day—your bed may be at fault. An uncomfortable mattress can also keep you active during the night, leaving you weary during the day.
How can you ensure that your new mattress is better than your old one? Begin by abandoning the firmness doctrine. The ideal mattress yields to your contours. But not too much. Side and stomach sleepers tend to need more give than back sleepers. And a woman’s hips will need to sink deeper than a man’s.
When you shop, try lying on your back without a pillow for at least five minutes. The mattress should stay in contact with your body, so that your hand fits snugly into the small of your back. Switch to your side and make sure you don’t notice pressure on your hips or shoulders. None of this is a guarantee. That’s why you should buy with the option to return or exchange—sleep shops like 1-800-MATTRESS and Mattress Discounters (1-800-BUY-A-BED) allow exchanges within 30 or 60 days. Joseph and I wanted to write and tell you how pleased we have been with the customer service that we have received from Flobeds.

You and your staff were great in straightening out the problem with our receipt of a wrong size core and the associated shipping delays. After we received the correct size cores, they have assisted us in adjusting the core firmnesses.

It is not often that we find a Company that the staff consistently treats customers, as you would want to be treated. Everyone has been gracious, as well as knowledgeable about your product.

Joseph and I looked and looked to the point of total frustration to find a mattress to fulfill our need of dual firmness. We thought the we would have to settle for something in between until Joseph found your site on the internet. I have slept on a waterbed for the past 30 years and was used to a very soft and flexible mattress. I am pleased that your mattress conforms to my body shape and I do not feel any “pressure points”. Joseph has a bad back, takes medication on a daily basis and requires a very firm bed. He is delighted that your mattress gives him the kind of support that helps his back feel pain-free, but without the harshness of a 'hard' mattress.

My husband and I have now slept on our latex flo-bed for a year. Our friends who ordered a flo-bed after trying ours came for dinner party the other night, where we each proceeded to rave about our flo-beds until everyone else got bored of hearing about it. Not to bore you, but the gist of it was. We never realized how much sleep we were losing to uncomfortable mattresses. Never again will any of us sleep on anything else. And the service from your store was first rate. So if you every need a recommendation, we'd be happy to supply one. Just thought you would like to know.
